Diana Krall recently sat down with NPR Morning Edition's Steven Inskeep for one of her most candid interviews to date, and shared her unique method for interpreting standards including "The Boy From Ipanema" from her chart-topping album Quiet Nights. In the interview, Krall also discusses her children's love of astronauts and outer space, which was certainly on her mind last week when Krall had the prestigious honor of performing at NASA's gala celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the moonwalk.

You can hear more of Krall as she tours the West Coast throughout August and appears on Willie Nelson's new album American Classic (out Aug 25th on Blue Note Records). Diana Krall will be the sole performer at Celebrate Apollo, the official event celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the moonwalk, on July 20th at the National Air And Space Museum in Washington DC. Krall will take the stage alongside the Columbia module to serenade Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong with "Fly Me To The Moon." Members of Congress and almost every living NASA
astronaut will be in attendance.

This prestigious event is only one highlight of an already busy summer including the following:

Willie Nelson To Release American Classic; His First Album Of Jazz Standards Since Stardust

Featuring Duets With Norah Jones & Diana Krall Album Is Due Out Aug. 25 On Blue Note Records

On August 25, legendary singer Willie Nelson will be releasing American Classic, his first album of jazz standards since his landmark 1978 masterpiece Stardust, and his solo debut for Blue Note Records. Produced by Tommy LiPuma, American Classic features special guest appearances by Norah Jones and Diana Krall, string arrangements by Johnny Mandel, and a top shelf backing band that includes Nelson’s longtime sidekick Mickey Raphael on harmonica, and such notable jazzmen as pianist Joe Sample, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash.

While it’s common now for mature pop artists to attempt to put their own stamp on the American Songbook, Nelson practically invented the approach. He set the standard for playing the standards with Stardust, perhaps this “outlaw” entertainer’s most daring move. The album went on to become the most successful album of his career thus far. It reached #1 on the Billboard’s Country Albums chart; racked up more than five million in sales; earned Nelson a Country Male Vocal Performance Grammy; and, most significantly, helped to transform a colorful, middle-aged cult figure into a mainstream star.

Encouraging Nelson to record Stardust was Bruce Lundvall, now President of Blue Note Records, who had the prescience to sign Nelson to Columbia in the ‘70s and, thirty years later, offer him a home at Blue Note. Nelson’s first effort for the label was his acclaimed 2008 collaboration with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Two Men With the Blues, a spirited live set that garnered wide acclaim and debuted at #20 on the Billboard pop chart.

Stellar performances by Diana Krall, James Taylor, Elton John, and Elvis Costello dazzled and delighted 550 guests at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver as part of last night’s invitation-only, black tie charity benefit, raising more than $2 million in funds to help patients with multiple myeloma, leukemia and other blood-related cancers at VGH. Guests of the evening were spellbound with lush, intimate performances by the legendary artists. Diana Krall treated guests to a world-debut performance of the Burt Bacharach composition, “Walk on By,” from her Brazilian-infused, soon-to-be-released album, “Quiet Nights.” Sarah McLachlan, a guest of the evening and West Vancouver neighbour, added to the evening’s special cachet with a heartfelt impromptu solo performance. The evening culminated in a tour-de-force finale featuring Diana Krall, James Taylor, Sarah McLachlan and Elvis Costello--the first such time the artists have ever performed on stage together. Highlights from the evening’s spectacular live auction included a spontaneous offer by Elton John to have one’s own lyrics set to music penned, performed and recorded by Elton John himself—a once in a lifetime opportunity—which was offered to two individuals for $250,000 each. Universal Music Canada / Verve Records is pleased to announce that international jazz superstar, Diana Krall will be touring coast-to-coast this Spring to promote her 12th studio album, Quiet Nights.

This tour marks the first time that Krall will perform tracks from Quiet Nights for her Canadian fans. The 15-city national tour, presented by CBC Radio 2, kicks-off April 15 in Calgary, AB and ends May 13 in her hometown of Vancouver, BC. Quiet Nights will be available for purchase March 31st. Hello everyone! Diana has temporarily shifted her role from recording artist to producer as she steps into the studio with Barbra Streisand. Diana is home in Vancouver for the holidays with her husband Elvis Costello and her two boys who turned 2 on December 6th. Diana will be back in the recording studio with Ms. Streisand in January. Diana's own CD "Quiet Nights" will be released March 31st. We will be changing the look and feel of Diana's web site, so watch for that soon! Jazz acquires new fans and change environment on Dec 2nd, at 11:00am with the concerts on the first edition of Telefônica Open Jazz. From traditional small clubs to the lawn under Sao Paulo sky at Parque Villa-Lobos, Jazz music will be at the reach of all audiences in this project, which the main goal is to popularize the style born in New Orleans.
